History/Overview
Introduced in 2020, the Audi A5 Sportback expands on the compact coupe and convertible model’s lineup with four doors and a hatchback cargo opening. There are also speedier S5 and RS5 Sportback variants, each of which is covered in its own buyer’s guide entry.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
The A5 Sportback’s changes for 2023 are limited to a handful of newly standard features for the base model, and some updated options in the car’s other trims.
Available Trims
Audi offers the A5 Sportback in Komfort, Progressiv, and Technik trim levels. All three are powered by a 2.0L turbo engine with mild hybrid assist, a seven-speed automatic transmission, and AWD.
Standard Features
New standard kit in this year’s Komfort trim includes front and rear parking sensors, heated/auto-dimming side mirrors, driver’s seat memory, a heated steering wheel, wireless phone charging/phone integration, and rear cross-traffic alert.
Komfort standard features carried forward from 2022 include 19-inch wheels, LED headlights, passive keyless entry, hands-free trunk, heated/power-adjustable front seats, and leather upholstery. You also get three-zone A/C, an auto-dimming interior mirror, sunroof, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, 10-speaker audio, and a 7.0-inch driver info display.
Komfort also gets a suite of driver safety assists comprising front and rear collision detection/mitigation, lane departure warning, blind spot monitor, and exit warning system.
Progressiv trim’s key additions are a sport suspension, automatic high beams, sport seats with lumbar, navigation, and digital gauges.
Finally, Technik models gain laser headlights with washers, power-folding side mirrors, rear-seat USB charging, an upgraded stereo, top-view camera, adaptive cruise control, more sophisticated forward collision mitigation, traffic jam assist, road sign recognition, and active lane assist.
Key Options
Progressiv can be optioned with an advanced safety package that includes Technik’s driver assists.
In Progressiv and Technik, a comfort interior group brings ventilated seats, and an S line package adds a variety of black exterior trim elements and red brake calipers.
Stand-alone options include a head-up display, heated rear seats, and an adaptive damping suspension.
Fuel Economy
Audi’s fuel consumption estimates for the A5 Sportback are 9.7/7.4 L/100 km (city/highway).
Competition
The Audi A5 Sportback’s only direct competitor is the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. The Kia Stinger can’t boast the same level of brand cachet, but it’s a terrific value for a comparable level of performance.
